"After purchasing the Diamantina Sheraton Majestic tent a little under a year ago and after a few camping trips away with the family. We recently went away for a long weekend away just last weekend. The weather was absolutely terrible. We had 80mm of rain the first day along with an average of 60km winds with gusts much much higher. As the weekend went on the rain started to ease but the wind just didn't let up 3 days and nights solid of wind. This has made us really understand what a great tent we had purchased. No rain seeping in at all and not much wind disturbance considering the conditions. Only concern we had was because of the wet weather and the ground becoming softer and wetter we started to loose a few pegs here and there so we had to purchase some larger and heavier duty pegs for the conditions.

Why Consider a Diamantina Canvas Tent ?

Cooler    - The tent materials allow hot air to escape better than synthetic tents, providing more comfort, less condensation and humidity inside.

Quieter  - At night when there is a breeze, synthetic tents are noisy and rattle, quality canvas tents don't.

Stronger - The frames of most canvas tents are much stronger in cross winds, holding their shape firm and stable.  In many cases, canvas tents can handle double the wind strength of dome tents.  Many canvas tents dont require any guy ropes (all dome tents recommend using guy ropes), so there is less work to set them up.

Durable - Will last for many years longer than a synthetic tent under the Australian sun.  UV will break down synthetic materials quicker than canvas.  Quality canvas tents have up to three times the UV resistance of budget synthetic tents.

Darker - When you want more sleep in the early hours of the morning, a canvas tent will let in less light.  Some synthetic tents create a sillouette and are see through when back lit.  Canvas tents wont do this.

Taller - Canvas tents usually have straighter walls and a higher roof line than many synthetic tents.  This means you have more head room, and straighter walls gives you greater use of the internal space, such as using double bunks closer to the sides.  Some dome tents encroach on the sides, so the usable space is less.

Water resistant - Canvas tents can perform just as well as synthetic tents in heavy rain.  The canvas swells when wet combining this effect with the waterproofing treatments means you have a tent that performs well in the rain.  With better quality waterproofing treatments being used in premium tents, you can touch the insides of the tent walls without having water leak through.

Diamantina canvas tents are becoming widely recognised across Australia as the premium brand for quality canvas tents, the preferred choice for campers who want strength and durability.  A well maintained canvas tent of good quality will last up to thirty years with good use.  There is no dome tent on the market today made using synthetic materials that will last this long.  In fact, dome tent fabrics being 100% synthetic, will last up to 10 years with good use, or approximately one third of the expected life span of a quality canvas tent.  Quality canvas fabrics have greater UV resistance than any dome tent materials which increases the life expectancy of the tent, especially in Australian conditions.  When a 100% synthetic tent material is exposed to the heat of the Australian sun for prolonged periods of time, the characteristics of the fabric are altered, and colour, strength and performance begins to deteriorate. 

Good quality canvas materials are made using high density thread counts for maximum tear resistance, abrasion resistance, and water resistance.  However the importance of breathability cannot be understated.  Sleeping in a tent that does not breathe can be like sleeping in a damp and hot sauna.  Diamantina canvas tents are made considering water resistance and breathability, making them perfect for the hot Australian climate.  This is achieved by using tightly woven fabrics combining a blend of cotton fibres for maximum breathability, and polyester fibres for maximum strength and durability.

Diamantina canvas tents also have the added advantage of stronger steel frame structures - rated with the exclusive Category 5 Frame System - tested to withstand wind strengths up to 100km per hour *.   These canvas tents can handle up to three times the wind speed strength of most dome style tents.

Diamantina canvas tents include large awnings for added shade in the sun often not found in dome tents.  The rooms are often larger, providing greater head room with larger windows.  This means greater flow of circulating air through the tent, resulting in cooler, more comfortable living conditions in hot weather.

The construction of seams and peg points in quality Diamantina canvas tents are heavier duty by nature due to the folded seam constructions, the heavy duty webbing peg points, and the extra fabric reinforcing used in each stress point.  These features are important in windy conditions when the tent is placed under added stress.

Only the best materials

The best available fabrics are used after extensive research the world over. The safari range of products is manufactured from ripstop polyamide fabric.  A high quality ripstop tenting construction processed using our Dynaproof(r) formulation. It is a poly / cotton base fabric which uses highly twisted 2 ply yarn in both the warp and weft for extreme durability.  Cotton base fabric for its breathability characteristics, blended with polyester to add extra strength and durability.

Dynaproof(r) is the name given to our proofing system, the quality of which is without compromise. It is applied by fully immersing the cloth into a padding bath and then drawing the fabric through a Rubber Roller Squeeze Mangle. This process is repeated a second time to ensure total impregnation of the proofing chemicals into the interstices of the fabric. Rather than applying a coating over the top of the fabric that over time may peel off, or experience patches where the film is not totally water tight.  The total impregnation process used here ensures the proofing is soaked right through to the core of every fibre, so you receive a fabric that has the best possible protection for many years to come.  This technique maximises the durability and performance of both Proofing and Fabric. Dynaproof(r) incorporates U.V. Inhibitors and two rot proofing agents as part of the standard formulation to resist the widest spectrum of activity against fungicidal and algicidal attack.

At the end of the day the fabric used in the construction of these tents is the best.  This fabric is also used in Australia for the construction of premium quality camper trailers, and offers supperior resistance to tearing and abrasions, fire retardancy, water resistance, fade resistance, mildew resistance.

In addition, the poles for this range of tents are made using spring steel - super strong - with at least double the wind resistance of polyester dome tents available.  The insect screen windows are made using shadecloth again for added strength.  Finally only YKK nylon self repairing zips are used and these carry the full Ykk guarantee. The groundsheets on all Campmor quality tents are manufactured from PVC coated polyester, with a weight factor of 550 grams per square metre.

Poduct Test - The Perfect Storm

 On the night of Tuesday 22nd September Sydney experienced a wind and dust storm like no other in history with flash lightning, up to 9mm of pouring rain, and howling winds gusting up to 95 km per hour measured by the Buro of Meteorology.  By 5am on Wednesday morning, Sydney was engulfed in orange dust, blown by 95 km per hour winds carrying thousands of tons of the fine dust from outback Australia, leaving the whole city sky with an eerie orange glow.  The airport was closed, Sydney Ferries were shut down and city buildings, homes and cars were covered in orange dust, the likes of which had never been experienced before.

We experienced this storm whilst camping on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour, testing the performance of tents.  On Cockatoo Island a total of 75 Campmor Hennie Canvas dome tents were set up.  After the storm was over on Wednesday afternoon, an inspection of all 75 tents revealed not one had been damaged in the wind storm.  Every tent was still standing.  The photo above was taken at 8am on Wednesday morning, whilst the winds were still blowing at more than 50km per hour, and as you can see, every tent is still up.  An amazing result given the ferocity of the winds, and the fact that Cockatoo Island camping ground is in a highly exposed location, where the westerly winds roar down Parramatta River.  We know of no other tent that could out perform these tents in similar conditions.

This result proves once again the strength and durability of these tents as not only some of the best quality tents in Australia, but the best in the world. 

Product Test - Proven Performance

To test the quality of these tents, we supplied a Campmor Safari Hennie tent to the Management of Cockatoo Island Camping Ground in Sydney Harbour.  Cockatoo Island is a Federal government project, offering the people of Sydney the opportunity to hire camping gear and camp with friends and family on Cockatoo Island right in the middle of Sydney Harbour, the most beautiful harbour in the world.  With easy access via Sydney Ferries, state of the art facilities, a cafe, and beautiful views, Cockatoo Island offers a unique camping experience for those wanting to try camping.

This Safari Hennie tent was set up and left on display permanently for 6 months on the Island, enduring heat, wind and rain conditions.  After 6 months the Campmor Safari Hennie still looked in as new condition, with no signs of fading, or wear and tear.  The solid spring steel frame withstood high wind conditions, with very little movement, rattles or noise.

Most tents available in Australia are designed for holiday or temporary accommodation and are not designed for this kind of permanent exposure.  Therefore we were very impressed with the overall performance of the Campmor Safari Hennie.  This test demonstrates the quality of the Campmor Canvas Dome tents, their superior duability and life expectancy, and their suitability to the harsh Australian climate.

Conclusion - The Campmor tent range is made using some of the best quality materials available in the world and therefore are suitable for extended or repeat usage, and for those who value real quality.  They suit harsh climate conditions such as strong winds, extended exposure to heat and heavy rains.  These tents experience less condensation and cooler internal temperatures than some alternatives, as the canvas has a high cotton content allowing for air flow and heat transfer, making them comfortable for Australian summer conditions.

There are no expensive ongoing maintenance requirements, such as painting. These tents will stand permanently for 10 years or more in the harsh Australian climate.  The designs and features can be modified/ customised to suit your requirements, eg longer awnings.  Simple power supply options can be set up without expensive permanent electrical installations, simply by running power leads to the tent, giving you greater flexibility as to the positioning and location of the structure.  There is also no complicated and expensive building approvals to be gained, as these tents are classed as temporary structures.

This tent requires a floor area of 9 mtrs x 5 mtrs minimum to set it up.  This space is made up by three areas within the tent: 1) front awning/ verandah - space is approx 5 mtrs x 2.2mtrs long. 2) main room of the tent - this in one big room with a fully sewn in floor.  This part of the tent hangs off the main frame structure and has straight side walls, then the canvas flysheet fits over the top to create an extra roof layer, the front awning and the rear bathroom.  The inner tent has 4 windows (2 either side) and the sewn in floor area of the tent is approx 4 mtrs wide x 5 mtrs deep.  This room can be made up to create a luxurious room with a queen size bed and side tables, as well as a sitting bench if desired.  Alternatively, this room will fit 2 x double beds comfortably, or up to 12 x single stretcher beds. 3) rear bathroom area - this space is off the back of the main room, there is no floor in this area.  The width of this area is wider than the main room as shown in the photos, floor area of approx 5 mtrs wide X 1.8 mtrs.  This space can fit a bath, a shower and a toilet if required.
