Camper Trailers

Diamantina Freelander 4+ Multi Purpose Camper Trailer |

|
Heres what most camper trailer sales people dont want you to know the most important guide written for buying a camper trailer.
The Australian market has been flooded with affordable camper tops of late that provide a great deal of space for the price. It is an exciting time for the industry as it has meant the camper trailer has been embraced by so many new customers that previously would not have considered a camper. There are some trade offs though, and a cheap camper is not always the best choice.
There is a lot more to think about other than just how big the camper is, and how many accessories you can get for a cheap price. In some cases you can get a lot for your money, but if the design is not using the latest innovations, the time to set up some camper trailers can take much longer and be more complex than a large tent.Too many times people buy a camper trailer in this way, use it once, discover how difficult it is to set up and pack up, and never use it again. What a waste.
If set up time is a critical point for you, choose your camper trailer wisely. Some outdated camper trailer designs are simply too difficult to set up and offer little or no advantage to buying a box trailer and a quality canvas tent (which would be a much cheaper option).
So to help out here are a few tips to look for:
- Check the canvas - Of course the quality of the canvas is essential for the performance and longevity of the tent. Check the mix of polyester and cotton. Polyester provides strength, water resistance, fast drying time and longevity. Cotton provides breathability and natural ventilation to reduce condensation, increase air flow and makes the tent cooler. The canvas we use in the Diamantina Freelander 4+ is the same successful canvas we use on our premium range of canvas tents. Dont get hung up simply comparing the ounce weight of the canvas used. There are many other important factors to keep in mind as well - ie breathability, tear strength, abrasian resistance, UV resistance, water resistance. The density of the weave is more important than the ounce weight in our opinion, as greater density will increase tear strength, abrasian resistance, and durability without increasing weight. Also, a flat canvas gives a uniform finish for the colour and protective coatings to be applied.
- Be aware of some of the "ripstop" fabrics found in cheap camper trailer tops. These days some have quite a large embedded thread in them creating an uneven surface and therefore compromising the coating process. A raised check thread is not the measure of a strong fabric. Many camper trailer brands on the market choose not to use rip stop materials. Feel the canvas quality used, and compare to others.
- Make sure the camper trailer is sewn using a dual-density thread. That is one with a polyester core for strength but also has a cotton sheath that will swell up to help keep your tent watertight. We use an internationally acclaimed Coates thread, suited to the premium density canvas we use.
- Look for a strong mesh - Given the amount of mesh used in Australian tents, an easy way to keep costs down is with a lightweight mesh. In our opinion a lightweight mesh does not compliment a product made from canvas and steel. You don't have plastic widows on your house do you? Unlike say a dome tent with a flexible frame, canvas tents and campers are rigid structures so all elements must be strong. On occasions you may not get a perfectly flat site, and the tent may not sit exactly square. When this is the case you will put pressure on all the materials, particularly around doorways. If you have big expanses of mesh then just beware, it must be strong to hold together. Just make sure you have a good feel of the different mesh used as you look around. In our design we have carefully manufactured the doors to ensure zippers can run smoothly and the tension on the mesh panels is minimal due to the design of a "windoor".
- Look at the pitch of the roof - This is such a vital design issue, particularly for those camper trailers with a larger roof area or a larger size awning.Look at how taught the roof line looks. Does it sit straight and firm, or does it have sections where it sags or is over tight ? Some camper trailer designs require a lot of poles to get the taught shape, others don't. The variations occur due to the skills of the designers and canvas manufacturers. If the surface are of the roof is large and long, the angle of the roof pitch is critical for effective water drainage. If the roof has a shallow pitch (ie a roof span greater than 4 metres and a centre height of only 2.3 metres or less) there is a good chance in constant rains, water is going to pool in the roof because the angle is not steep enough to allow effective water drainage. In these instances, more poles are used to support the roof = more work to set up. The Diamantina Freelander 4+ has a cathedral pitch centre roof height - 2.65 metres or 9 feet. This extra height provides the correct water drainage pitch for the roof line - no pools of water in the roof.
- Zips - The zips on your tent have to handle a big workload, particularly on the doors. Again, when you cant pitch perfectly square you add even more pressure. Look for genuine YKK zips. These are the worlds best with an unparalleled reputation. Look at various camper trailer models and see where YKK zips are used. You will find them on the premium products. You can spot a YKK zip as the letters are inscribed on the zip puller.
- Frame - The frame system is a very important element to evaluate different camper trailers, and one in which hides some facts that will not be openly disclosed. When you view all the youtube videos showing how fast some camper trailers are to set up, they all show the main room set up only. None of them show all the elements to setting up the whole camper trailer, including the set up time for the awnings. No one will say, you can open the main canopy in 30 seconds but this awning will take 30 minutes to pitch.
- The main tent - One of the most common reasons people move to a camper is the desire for quicker pitching time. A key design feature of a camper is to be able to open it up and peg it down quickly. Sure the bigger ones may require another couple of poles and this is totally appropriate. However, some require more than a few. The key here is to check the roof. Does the camper simply open up or are you then required to adjust or move poles, and add extra spreader bars between all the "hood bows". If so why? Is the material and/ or the design not strong enough to create the tension required when opened out and pegged down? Also, beware of the models that require many adjustments to get the floor perfectly square, especially with uneven sites. The time you spend making these necessary adjustments to get a square floor ads extra work to your set up time. Once this is achieved there is still more time to set up the rest of the awning to consider.
- The awnings - After months of research and hard work, we have managed to cut down the number of support poles required in the awning canopy design, to make set up quick and easy. By concentrating on the roof pitch, the cut and sewing of the canopy to achieve a taught shape, and a simplified frame adjustment system, we have significantly cut down the time required to set up the main tent and the side awnings compared to other campers. We have achieved a one touch awning ridge bar system, combining a series of hinges and one touch support poles. The total number of roof ridge bars in our awning has been cut down to only 6 poles. Compare this to the number of poles in many other camper trailer awnings. More roof ridge poles = more work and time to set up.
- All camper trailer side awnings require ridge bars coming off the mainframe of the tent. Have a close look at the connection of the ridge to the main tent. Ask yourself is it 8 or 9ft high. How am I going to get up there? Is it difficult to anchor and keep anchored while I pitch the rest of the awning? We have launched a brand new innovation to address this difficult area in our new Diamantina Freelander 4+ Camper Trailer. It is very exciting and basically makes the trickiest part of the awning the easiest. We can honestly say that in this case frustration has been the mother of innovation.
- Spreader bars through the middle of the awning are common and a good option given the large spans of canvas. Just check how they attach, make sure it looks easy. Make sure there is not cheap components used that may break. Remember you are dealing with great heights in these roofs, it cant be too tricky.
- Now check the rest of the frame. You really don't want to have an intricate web of poles to have to identify and piece together all around the awning area. This can be a very time consuming, frustrating process and can also be physically be very difficult. If you are into puzzles buy one in a box to do when you are set up, you don't want a 3D one made from poles you have to balance in the air if you can help it.
- Check the standard of poles. Ask the supplier to remove an upright pole a feel the weight. Compare with others. Not all poles are the same, have a close look.
- Be realistic about your use of your camper trailer. Heres a classic quote I received from a client recently. "Bigger is not best. If theres too much work in the poles it will be frustrating and time consuming to set up and you wont want to go camping".An enormous camper tent may look appealing for the money. Just remember the bigger you go the longer it will take to put up and the harder it will be to find a suitable site or even multiple sites in some cases. If you are buying a camper trailer to sleep many kids have a think about how long before they will want their own tent. Will you then be stuck with a camper far bigger and heavier than you need?
The Diamantina Freelander 4+ Camper Trailer includes modular components, that can be added or subtracted easily from the camper trailer to increase or reduce the space required. Our camper trailer will suit a couple going away for a weekend, and the same camper will suit a family of 4-5 people staying in one spot for two weeks. Many other camper trailer designs will not offer this flexibility.
Some camper trailers may have an extra screen room as well as an annex. Are you ever going to put it up, remember how hard that annex may be to pitch? Will you ever find a site big enough and flat enough to pitch all of these components? Maybe you should consider a screened in pop-up gazebo as an extra. Look at the awning areas. The tent is for sleeping, the awning is for living. Look for a big awning but not one that will take half a day to pitch.
These questions provide plenty of food for thought in your research. Hopefully this guide has helped to provide some useful tips.

Why are some camper trailers more difficult and time consuming to set up ? |
|
Camper trailers all look similar from the outside, but there is a big difference in set up times. The main reason for this is variations in the design of the frame structure both inside the camper trailer and under the awning, which is also guided by the design and shape of the canvas. This is where the skill and knowledge of the design team is important. More poles means more time and effort to set up and pack up.
The above photos show a camper trailer with a complicated web of poles to support the awning. Poles all around the edge of the awning plus poles criss crossing over the middle to make the canvas sit correctly. In some cases we have seen in excess of 20 poles in this section alone. Imagine the time it takes to set all of this up ? This is what we have avoided, after spending many hours designing and testing different models to ensure the final set up process is as simple and as practical as possible. |
|
Why is the Diamantina Freelander 4+ quicker to set up ? |
|

|
|
This photo above shows the underside of the Diamantina Freelander 4+ awning using much less poles. There's only 6 support bars for the large awning. Its so much easier to set up. We removed the need for many side support poles around the edge of the awning, and no difficult wing nuts or complicated high to reach attachment points requiring a step ladder. We also designed a special new feature - a permanently attached centre ridger bar that simply swings into place using a hinge system - very clever. The support poles for the Diamantina freelander 4+ Camper Trailer use a "One Touch" pole locking mechanism that can be operated with one hand in seconds, allowing the awning to set up in less than half the time of many alternatives. |

What about the trailer - Australian made or from overseas ?
Many trailers are now fully made overseas and assembled in Australia. Ours are not - we provide fully Australian made trailers made using Australian steel. These trailers have been professionally made in the same factory in Sydney for over 30 years, tried and tested on Australian roads and outback conditions during this time to ensure they are built to Australian standards and to withstand harsh Australian conditions. There are differences in the quality and thickness of the steel sheeting used in the manufacturing of trailers. Check them for yourself.
All our trailer side walls are corrigated panels for added side wall stability and strength, all made using steel checker plate for the fully welded floors and wheel guards. The trailers we provide for the Diamantina Freelander 4+ are supplied with brand new tyres with sunraysia wheels, swing up jockey wheel, drop down rear stabilizer legs on either side, 180 degree flexible ball joint coupling, 1.5m to 1.8m draw bars depending on the model and features chosen, 5 leaf slipper springs suspension (semi-off road), 7 leaf outback rebound shackle springs suspension (full off-road), integrated platform step from the trailer to the bed (better than a ladder), 39mm solid round axle (semi off-road), 45mm solid square axle (full off-road), 1 x 4kg gas bottle holder and 1 x jerry can holder (semi off-road) and 1 x 9kg gas bottle holder and 2 x jerry can holders (full off-road).
The Freelander 4+ Camper Trailer top is mounted on a solid marine ply timber base and attached to the trailer using lockable hinges and gas struts. The camper top can be removed from the trailer if desired so the trailer can be used independently.
Because we make the trailers in Sydney, we can customise many features for each individual customers needs. Some examples of the modifications we have done include -
Boat racks, fitting bike racks, water tanks, additional gas bottle holders, fully hot dipped galvanising, drop down shelves on the tailgate, storage boxes, various kitchen designs, stone guards, spare wheel mounts, 360 degree polyblock coupling, alko independent rubber suspension systems, brackets to hold eskis, motor bike ramps or BBQs. Various design options can be discussed with our trailer engineers. |
